Project IRL: Playful Co-Located Interactions with Mobile Augmented Reality

نویسندگان

چکیده

We present Project IRL (In Real Life), a suite of five mobile apps we created to explore novel ways supporting in-person social interactions with augmented reality. In recent years, the tone public discourse surrounding digital technology has become increasingly critical, and technology's influence on way people relate each other been blamed for making feel "alone together," diverting their attention from truly engaging one another when they interact in person. Motivated by this challenge, focus an under-explored design space: playful co-located interactions. evaluated through deployment study that involved interviews participant observations 101 people. synthesized results into series guidelines four themes: (1) device arrangement (e.g., are sharing phone, or does person have own?), (2) enablers should activity object, body part, pet?), (3) affordances modifying reality (i.e., features enhance its potential encourage various aspects interaction), (4) play using make inviting). conclude presenting our future work embodied AR.

Designing Effective Mobile Augmented Reality Interactions

This paper is an extended abstract of the doctoral thesis [1] which attempts to fill the knowledge gap between user understanding and available Augmented Reality (AR) technology, a result of the general lack of user studies in AR and high-pace technology-driven AR development. The thesis pursues this goal by: (i) reviewing perceptual issues that relate to handheld AR in order to identify usabil...

Designing Mobile Augmented Reality Interfaces for Locative Games and Playful Experiences

Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) has predominantly been used in locative games and playful experiences for the presentation on virtual game objects in conjunction with separate 2-D maps for navigation. This distinct switch in interaction modalities can detract from the game play experience and will arguably be less relevant for AR glasses. Therefore this research considers the application techniq...

Mobile Augmented Reality Applications

Augmented reality have undergone considerable improvement in past years. Many special techniques and hardware devices were developed, but the crucial breakthrough came with the spread of intelligent mobile phones. This enabled mass spread of augmented reality applications. However mobile devices have limited hardware capabilities, which narrows down the methods usable for scene analysis. In thi...
